It's our multi-disciplinary approach that makes us different:
"When any of us visits a carer we can recognise if their question is something we can deal with or whether it's something for the Health Advisor, or something for a Therapist" - SWIIS Education Worker
Our Health Advisors are qualified and registered nurses with many years experience. They have a key role in ensuring that health is kept on everyone's agenda.
Our Health Advisors:
- Support our carers and staff on a day-to-day basis
- Link in with local health staff to ensure children and young people can access medical and dental services
- Link in with Looked After Nurses and other specialist staff for Looked After children to ensure that there is continuity of health care when a child is placed with us
- Provide specialist advice and support with children with complex medical difficulties
- Provide training to carers and staff e.g. in first aid and mental health
- Offer age appropriate health education including smoking cessation, healthy eating, substance misuse and sexual health to young people in placement
Example of a Health Advisor's work:
Early in placement of a teenager - linking in with foster carer to co-ordinate registration with a GP, dentist and optician. Later in placement - providing direct input with the young person about healthy eating.
