Therapy Service

"I had a lot of contact with health and therapy staff. The support I received from therapy department last year helped me through a difficult placement and really helped me understand the child I was looking after." - SWIIS Foster Carer

At SWIIS Foster Care (Scotland) we know it's our job to help children and young people recover from past adversity, trauma and loss- only then can they truly grow and develop.

We believe that the best way to do this is to build the potential for all our carers to offer Therapeutic Re-Parenting. In order to do well, we need a deep appreciation of the child's past, as well as their current behaviours. We can then understand how a child's relationship with their foster family has the potential to be therapeutic.

Each of our teams has an experienced, qualified and registered creative (play, art or music) therapist. Their role is:
  • to work with the whole care team to facilitate a deep understanding of the child or young person's individual therapeutic needs.
  • to support carers and their families to offer therapeutic re-parenting, by meeting with carers either individually or in a group with other carers.
  • to undertake assessments of children and young people.
  • to undertake direct work with children and young people.
  • to be available to staff and carers for advice.
  • to link with mainstream Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) teams.
Not all children and young people have the same needs and not all children need the whole range of services. The SWIIS approach to therapeutic support allows for a tailored response for each child.

It also builds capacity and skills for our carers. This is backed by good relevant training in child development, attachment, behaviour management and self-regulation.
